Fifth-wheel trailers
are compared to larger travel trailers; the difference is the extension on the front of the box that extends over the tow vehicle. Naturally, a full size truck serves the towing vehicle with a fifth wheel hitch (also referred to as a gooseneck hitch) installed in the bed of the truck. The type of tow vehicle you need will depend on the type of fifth wheel you plan to buy. For the smaller trailers no longer than 23 feet long can safely be pulled by a half-ton truck. Now with the mid-sized trailers ranging from 23 to 30 feet does require a three-quarter ton or a one-ton truck to tow it. For the larger fifth wheels 30 feet and up you will need a truck with a diesel-powered engine. The preferred towing vehicle for fifth wheels over 9,000 pounds is a diesel-powered, dual-wheeled truck. Many fifth wheels provide a slide out to offer more living space, along with placing a bedroom (in most models) in the extension on the front of the fifth-wheel. Fifth-wheel trailers normally provide cooking facilities, faucets, sinks, a refrigerator, heating, air conditioning, a self-contained toilet, a shower, water tanks (fresh water, grey water, and black water), a LP propane gas supply, and a separate 100-125 volt electrical system. Most fifth-wheels can sleep up to six people depending on the model and floor plan. The most recent trend in fifth wheel trailers is known as a toy hauler or also called a toy box. This new trend includes include a large cargo area at the rear that is accessed via a tall tailgate that swings down to create a loading ramp. Toy haulers are great for many outdoor adventurers like having the capability to use the toy hauler as a base camp while being able to take the all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, watercraft, or snowmobiles out to play. The price range for a new toy hauler fifth wheel can range from $20,000 to $100,000 depending on the upgrades you add to it.
