The desert is a hot, dry place that can very quickly dehydrate unprepared campers. Make sure you’re not one of them by stocking up on enough water. This includes drinking water, as well as water for washing, cooking, cleaning, etc. It’s always better to have too much than to need it and not be able to get it.

Warm Clothes

Yes, the desert is hot during the day but nights can often get chilly. Shorts might be good for the daytime but you’ll need something warmer if you’re going to be out and about after the sun sets. Make sure you pack some full-coverage clothes and some extra blankets for when the temperature drops.

Critter Awareness

There are a lot of creatures that call the desert home and some of them can be deadly for you. Inform yourself of the most dangerous ones you may meet and keep some reference material on hand that you can refer to when needed. You should ideally know how to treat non-lethal bites. 

Navigational Tools

The desert is beautiful and mysterious, and is home to many areas that don’t have great network coverage. Don’t rely solely on your phone for directions and make sure you have different types of navigational tools if the need arises. Do ensure that all tech tools are properly charged before you leave your RV. 

Mind the Heat

It’s best not to step out of your camper during high heat afternoons. Use this time to relax or tackle light chores in your RV. It’s best to step out in the mornings or evenings when it’s a little cooler. Make sure you have sunscreen and sunglasses to save you from harmful UV rays when you’re out and about. 

Fill ‘er Up

There are plenty of gas stations in the American Southwest, but if you’re headed to more remote areas, you may not always find one. Additionally, some stations only provide fuel during certain seasons. Ensure that you fill your tank whenever possible. It’s better to be over-prepared rather than stranded in a place where help isn’t easily available.
